“Natural” Doesn’t Mean Safe: What Every Caregiver Needs to Know About Memory Supplements
As caregivers, we are on the front lines of aging. We watch our clients navigate the frustrating waters of memory lapses, and we listen when they express the deeply human desire to keep their minds sharp.
Recently, one of my elderly clients shared something that truly touched my heart. She is an incredibly sweet, determined little lady of an advanced age. It is absolutely amazing to see her powerful will to keep living, keep moving, and try to keep her mind as sharp as possible.
She told me she had explicitly asked her doctor to let her know when new options became available to help her memory. Months passed, and he never brought anything up. Feeling left in the dark, she took matters into her own hands and started looking into things she saw online and on television—including herbs like Bacopa and a heavily advertised supplement called Prevagen.
When she asked me about them, I realized I didn’t have all the facts. Like any dedicated caregiver, I knew I needed to get informed so I could safely advocate for her. What I uncovered during my research was eye-opening—and it made me realize how many other caregivers and seniors are completely unaware of the hidden risks behind these trendy bottles.
The reality we must face is simple: “Natural” does not automatically mean safe. Because these supplements are active in the body, they can cause powerful shifts. Our job isn’t to prescribe—but it is absolutely our job to know the hidden risks, monitor for side effects, and advocate for our clients' safety.
Here is what the science says about the most common memory supplements, and exactly what you need to watch out for.
1. The TV Commercial Mirage: Prevagen & The Jellyfish Protein
Prevagen is aggressively marketed on television, claiming to improve short-term memory using a synthetic protein originally found in glowing jellyfish (apoaequorin). My sweet client was deeply hurt that her doctor hadn't mentioned it to her.
- The Hidden Reality: Her doctor was actually protecting her. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) famously challenged the makers of Prevagen for deceptive advertising because their memory claims lack reliable scientific proof.
- The Science: Independent researchers point out that when you swallow a protein like the one in Prevagen, your stomach acid breaks it down instantly—long before it could ever reach the brain to help with memory.
- The Lesson: Our determined clients see beautiful commercials featuring active seniors and assume it’s a medical breakthrough, when it is actually unproven marketing.
2. Bacopa Monnieri: The Brain Tonic
Bacopa is a traditional Ayurvedic herb marketed to improve information processing speed and working memory.
- The Hidden Risk: Bacopa triggers the release of nitric oxide, which tells blood vessels to widen and relax. This causes a distinct drop in blood pressure.
- The Red Flag: For an older adult, a sudden drop in blood pressure can lead to dizziness when standing up from a chair or bed (orthostatic hypotension). This directly increases their risk of a dangerous fall. It is also famously tough on aging digestive tracts.
- What to Watch For: Unsteadiness when standing, dizziness, nausea, abdominal cramps, or sudden diarrhea.
3. Ginkgo Biloba: The Mind "Energizer"
Ginkgo is a widely used herb that increases blood flow to the brain and lets off the brain's natural "brakes" to increase alertness and focus.
- The Hidden Risk: Because it acts like a mild stimulant in the brain, Ginkgo can cause restlessness, anxiety, and severe insomnia in sensitive older adults.
- The Red Flag: Ginkgo has well-documented blood-thinning properties. If a client takes it alongside aspirin, warfarin, or other blood thinners, it significantly increases their risk of internal bleeding.
- What to Watch For: Unexplained bruising, frequent nosebleeds, sudden sleep disturbances, or a racing heart.
4. Ashwagandha: The Stress Adaptogen
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen used to calm the nervous system, lower stress hormones (cortisol), and improve sleep.
- The Hidden Risk: Like Bacopa, Ashwagandha can significantly lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
- The Red Flag: If your client takes prescription medications for hypertension or diabetes, adding Ashwagandha can create a dangerous "additive effect," causing their numbers to plummet too low.
- What to Watch For: Extreme fatigue, lightheadedness, or signs of low blood sugar (like sweating or shakiness).
The Caregiver’s Checklist: What Is Reversible?
Before a client spends money on unproven supplements to fix "memory loss," encourage the family to have the doctor check for these three silent, completely treatable culprits first:
- Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Older stomachs struggle to absorb B12 from food. A deficiency directly causes confusion and memory issues that look exactly like dementia.
- Mild Dehydration: Seniors naturally lose their sense of thirst. Chronic dehydration clouds mental clarity rapidly but is easily fixed.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): A sudden, drastic change in an elderly person's mental state or memory is frequently caused by a silent UTI, which clears up quickly with antibiotics.
Our Role as Advocates
Being an informed caregiver means bridging the gap between our clients and their medical teams. If you notice a client taking these supplements, use your knowledge to protect them:
- Document everything: Note the exact brand, dosage, and when they started taking it.
- Monitor changes: Keep a daily log of their balance, sleep quality, and digestion.
- Prompt a medical review: Encourage the client or their family to bring the actual supplement bottles to their next doctor or pharmacist appointment.
Knowledge is our best tool. By staying informed on the science behind these trends, we can ensure our clients are chasing better health safely, responsibly, and with their entire healthcare team on the same page.
I love sharing these deep-dives with you. If you want to keep these practical strategies and real-life caregiver toolkits right on your bookshelf, keep an eye out for my book, "The Amazing Caregiver," coming very soon!
